With the world’s increasing focus on sustainability in the construction sector through green building systems, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has been actively engaged in green building advocacy in the United States through USDA Tall Wood Building competitions and follow-up research on use of mass timber for nonresidential buildings. The USDA Forest Service, Forest Product Laboratory (FPL) funded the study of environmental performance of the pioneer mass timber building (the John W. O...

Cross laminated timber is an innovative plate-shaped product presenting a laminated structure and excellent physicomechanical properties. Due to its high stiffness and in-plane and out-of-plane bearing capacity, it is most often used in form of wall or floor panels. Favourable environmental, aesthetic and energy properties further enhance its qualities. The paper is a summary of CLT research conducted so far, with an emphasis on the need to harmonise existing regulations and include this product...

The effect of controllling the drying distortion of laminas on the production yield of cross-laminated timber (CLT) using Larix kaempferi wood

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of lamina distortion control on the production yield of cross-laminated timber (CLT) using domestic larch (Larix kaempferi) wood. The measured production yield of CLT was 27 %. The yields based on log volume of sawing, planing, cross-cutting, and finish planing of CLT were 49, 66, 96, and 86 %, respectively. The yield of sawing and planing can be improved by controlling distortion during drying. Using an experimental enforced-loading apparat...
Fire Resistance of Multistorey Timber Buildings
https://link.springer.com/content/pdf/10.1007%2F97... [Fire Performance] [Journal Article] 2015
Andrew H. Buchanan
Tall timber buildings are becoming popular around the world. This paper discusses options for setting the level of fire resistance in multistorey timber buildings. Fire resistance of timber structures involves a paradox, because it is well known that heavy timber construction has excellent fire resistance in severe fires, but it is also well known that burning of wood has contributed to severe damage and loss of life in some fires. This paradox often leads to contradictory statements on fire saf...
A review of structural, thermo-physical, acoustical, and environmental properties of wooden materials for building applications

The current environmental and energetic crisis and the resulting regulations led to a new interest in using sustainable materials for building applications. Wood can be a material with high sustainable rates because it is recyclable, reusable and naturally renewable. Moreover, its excellent strength-to-weight ratios, thermal insulating and acoustical properties make it useful for different kinds of applications in buildings, ranging from structural beams and frames, insulating envelopes, windows...
The Tall CLT Workshop

Colorado School of Mines
The Tall CLT building workshop was held at January 2014 in Seattle, WA and sponsored by the NSF NEES program through the NEES Planning grant in order to identify the societal needs and engineering challenges for Tall CLT construction in seismic active regions of the U.S., especially the Pacific Northwest. The purpose of this document is to provide a brief report on the event and share the contact information for all participants who provided their information on the sign-in sheets. A total of 62...

Potential of cross laminated timber in single family residential construction
https://dspace.library.colostate.edu/bitstream/han... [Economics/Costs] [Thesis/Dissertation] 2016
Brad Burback
Cross laminated timber (CLT) is a panelized engineered wood product that is gaining popularity in the United States as a structural material for massive timber buildings. CLT is shown to be cost competitive to steel and concrete in large building construction projects, but is seen as uncompetitive for smaller scale projects, especially light frame wood (LFW) residential construction. The purpose of this study is to provide a detailed comparison of the cost to construct a CLT home versus a LFW ho...
Structural performance of box based cross laminated timber system used in floor applications

The current outbreak of Mountain Pine Beetle (MPB) in the province of British Columbia (B.C.) is the most extensive disturbance event occurring in North American forests in recorded history. The concept of converting the beetle killed wood into engineered wood products by defect removal and reconstitution is employed to maximize value recovery from the material. Cross Laminated Timber (CLT), which is produced in modular form and can be utilized as part of a structural system for floor, wall or r...
Influence of Orientation and Number of Layers on the Elastic Reponse and Failure Modes on CLT Floors: Modeling and Parameter Studies
https://link.springer.com/content/pdf/10.1007%2Fs0... [Mechanical Performance] [Journal Article] 2016
Lorenzo Fanzoni, Arthur Lebee, Florent Lyon, Gilles Foret
In the present paper, the bending behavior of Cross Laminated Timber panels is investigated by means of the linear elastic exact solution from Pagano (1970, 1969). The resulting stresses are the input for a wood failure criterion, which can point out the first-crack load and the respective dominant failure mode. Heterogeneous layers are modeled as equivalent and homogeneous layers. This simplified and deterministic modeling gives results in good agreement with a reference experimental test. A co...
